What is Kiva ?
I’ll start by pounding Kiva’s mission statement into your cranium, as it was done to us during our training. Kiva’s mission is to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty.
What does that mean? That means that in a matter of minutes you can log onto Kiva’s website, evaluate a whole range of business plans and profiles of working poor entrepreneurs around the world, decide which one you like best and then lend money to that entrepreneur. Easy, right?
You connected with someone that there is virtually no chance you would have connected with through other means, and you financially supported their business that could ostensibly help the business owner and their family escape poverty. What’s cooler than that?
Here’s a neat visual that displays the cycle of a Kiva loan from Lender to MFI to Borrower back to MFI and finally back to Lender.

Hi Cameron,
congrats for your Kiva fellowship. I used to work with them in Cambodia three years ago. Great experience! Let me know if you are in Maputo and would like to share experience (and beer…).
