On Monday I traveled 10 arduous hours from Maputo to Johannesburg by bus. That pretty much marked the end of my Kiva Fellowship. It has been a very successful 4 months and my experience surpassed all of my expectations. Working with Hluvuku brought me closer to what we call development than I had ever been [...]

Here’s a quick video of my ultimate commute to Maputo from Bela-Vista. This video highlights the portion of the trip that involves going from Catembe to Maputo by ferry. Think Sausulito to San Francisco and then adjust for Southern Africa.

Last weekend I trekked 8 hours by bus (two ways) to Tofo Beach. On the way there the child in the row behind me vomited, on the way back the women with the feverish baby sitting next to me vomited on my leg. It was a trip full of sacrifice.
Upon boarding the bus at 5am [...]

My Changana education has continued. At this point I can usually tell when someone is asking where something is in Changana. A few consinate sounds followed by a “whey” and some gesticulation means where is X. That being said I don’t know how to write the “where is X” word. Here are a few more [...]

Yesterday I deviated a little bit from my work plan and joined a government envoy that was tasked with taking a cow 95KMs through the Maputo Elephant Reserve to a remote village for the inauguration of a new hospital. First we had to pick up the animal.
I just assumed we were going to pick the [...]
